Change for Pune Bungalow

Got a call from my client in Pune to say that we’d probably build just a single level bungalow after all. Right from the start, I’d been advising them that 4 bedrooms – for a family of 3 – was a complete waste of space and money.

Better late than never.

Now the only problem is I have to re-work the layout and, more importantly, the built form. Permissions from the municipal corporation have already been obtained, so I have to stick to the same footprint for the structure.

Updated on 19th March 2005

The revised plan was frozen yesterday. The puja will be on 6th April when, as architect, I must dig a token hole in the ground.

New Site at Fountain

Got a call from a client for whom I’d designed an office exactly 5 years ago. He’s purchased new premises in one of the old buildings near Fountain (Hutatma Chowk) and it has a ceiling that’s 16 feet (5m) high! The space is just a plain old rectangle but the arches on the sides add a lot of interest.

Unfortunately, the previous owners have done some “work” on the old door frames and I doubt I can salvage any of the original look now. There is a long verandah – a little more than 3 feet (1m) wide on the entire Western face – and it has some nice ironwork.

Panna and Bhopal

Made a trip to Panna Wildlife Sanctuary in Northern MP. Although it’s a tiger reserve, we certainly didn’t see any big cats – not a single carnivore for that matter. There was a lone pug-mark during the last jeep ride but none of the excitement that one has when one is trying to catch a glimpse of the animals. A high point, though, was seeing a large number of Chinkaras (Indian Gazelles) on the plateau.

As far as insects are concerned, I saw a lot of Rounded Pierrot [Tarucus nara] and Lesser Grass Blue [Zizina otis] butterflies, a plume moth and an unidentified creature with an attitude.

Went to Khajuraho for a day but it was quite a washout because of the weather. Finally, after dodging the rain for 2 hours, we decided to give up and go back. Having always seen photographs of the famous (and infamous) sculptures in sharp relief, the results from my own camera was a let-down.

Before returning to Bombay, I stopped off in Bhopal and had an opportunity to see Bharat Bhavan by Charles Correa. I’m afraid the place is not being utilised to it’s potential. Also, the Museum of Man was a disaster. They have acres and acres of space and a large part of it is just lying there – doing nothing. Sad.

Bumped up the RAM

I’d been meaning to bump up the RAM of my PC to 1 Gigabyte once prices dropped and then clean forgotten about it. Well, it just happened on Saturday the 5th. Initially, when I checked, the speed showed up as 166MHz while I was sure I’d bought 333MHz. Apparently AMD motherboards display the speed as half of what it’s actually running at. I can’t for the life of me figure out why.

Disappointing Dandeli

Took the long weekend to go to Dandeli in North Karnataka. Having heard so much about the forest over the years, maybe I expected too much. Species density for both, flora and fauna – was decidedly low although the forest itself looked lush enough at first glance. However, being mostly Teak plantation, even that tattered veil will be torn aside once the leaves fall in early March.

Recycling grey water

Made a flying visit to Pune to meet potential consultants for dealing with grey and kitchen waste water. At the very least, we’d like to deliver kitchen water to the landscaped areas of the garden. If possible, the soapy shower/washing machine water can be filtered and reused for flushing. Sometimes, people hesitate to adopt such systems, but if it is demonstrated that the filtered water is as good or even better than what they get in the municipal pipeline, one can usually convince them of the benefits.

Another Link for OttoPDF

Bill Landskroener from the US very kindly took the trouble to write in with a new link from which you can download OttoPDF – a stand-along freeware utility that converts AutoCAD drawings to PDF files. The developer pulled the plug on the app and downloads were hard to find. Now, thanks to Bill, you have one.

http://www.freecadapps.com/

There is a site search available but it didn’t work when I tried so you’ll have to go to the Utilities section and then to the Conversion sub-section and then hunt through the pages therein.

To know more about OttoPDF, check the PDF Utilities section.

Remove Buzzsaw and other Icons

Having reloaded the system from scratch because of repeated crashes, I realised that some things needed to be relearned at my end. One that nearly drove me crazy was AutoCAD’s insistence on putting the buzzsaw, RedSpark and PointA icons in the “Save” dialog box. Now it’s easy to get rid of Autocad Today – that option clearly exists, however, removing those annoying icons was a different matter altogether. I remember using a small utility to do that the last time around but I couldn’t for the life of me find it this time. That meant a journey into the registry. In the end, it was simpler than I expected.

NOTE: As always, fiddling with the registry can be dangerous so do this at your own risk – and only if you know how to make a backup beforehand.

Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER . software . Autodesk. AutoCADRx . CAD-xxxxProfiles . [your_profile_name] . Dialogs AllNavDialogs

Here, you have to create a new key in the left pane.

Name this key DeletedExtensions

In the right hand pane, you will now need to add two new strings to the key you just created: Buzzsaw and RedSpark

Repeat this procedure for each of the profiles you have.

Scroll down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERsoftwareAutodeskFileNavExtensions

It will have two strings in the right hand pane- FTPSites and SimpleFileStorage.

The first corresponds to FTP folders and the second to PointA.

Delete whichever you want. I got rid of the entire key.
